What are the Sick Leave regulations in Poland?

In Poland, sick leave regulations ensure that employees receive appropriate compensation and that the process for reporting and managing sick leave is streamlined.

Sick Leave Notification and Certification

  • Medical Certificates: Doctors send medical certificates electronically to the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS). Employers have access to a platform called "PUE ZUS," where they can view the employee's certificate as soon as it is issued.

  • Notification Requirement: Employees must notify their employer of their absence no later than the second day of absence.

Sick Leave Entitlements

  • Minimum Days:
    • Employees Younger than 50: Up to 33 days of sick leave per year.
    • Employees 50 or Older: Up to 14 days of sick leave per year.

Compensation During Sick Leave

  • Standard Sick Leave: Employers pay 80% of the employee’s salary for the duration of the sick leave up to the limits specified above. After this period, sickness benefits are provided by social security.

  • Special Cases: If the sick leave is due to an accident at work or illness during pregnancy, the employer pays 100% of the salary.
