Is remote work possible in the Philippines? What about allowances?
Working from home is legal in the Philippines. The Telecommuting Act, or Republic Act No. 11165, was signed into law to allow employees in the private sector to work from an alternative workplace with the use of telecommunication or computer technologies. This law aims to promote work flexibility and balance the needs of the workplace with employee productivity.
Work-from-home allowances exist in the Philippines, especially given the recent increase in remote work due to the pandemic. Employers may provide allowances to cover additional expenses incurred by employees working from home, such as internet connectivity, electricity, and other necessary tools and equipment. However, the provision of such allowances is at the discretion of the employer unless otherwise mandated or agreed upon in employment contracts or collective bargaining agreements.
