Are certain employees protected from dismissal in Armenia?

Yes. Under Armenian labor law, employees may be considered protected from dismissal in specific situations. If an employee falls into one of these categories, the termination process becomes significantly more restricted and legally sensitive.

The following conditions may grant an employee protected status:

  • Temporary inability to work, such as due to illness or medical leave

  • Being on official leave, including annual, parental, or sick leave

  • Participation in a strike

  • Serving as an employee representative, such as a union delegate or elected workplace representative

  • Cases involving discrimination, including termination attempts based on gender, religion, political views, or other protected characteristics

In these cases, termination may either be prohibited entirely during the period of protection or require prior approval from relevant labor authorities.

No employee should be dismissed without prior consultation with Horizons, the legal employer. Horizons will assess the situation and ensure that any termination process is fully compliant with Armenian labor law.
