Are there any restrictions on employee termination in Latvia?

Yes, Latvian labor law includes specific prohibitions on terminating certain categories of employees to ensure protection during vulnerable periods or in specific roles.

Termination Prohibitions:

Termination is not allowed in the following cases:

  • Pregnant employees and those up to 1 year postpartum, unless the termination is initiated by the employee or in exceptional legal cases.

  • Employees in a state of temporary incapacity for work (e.g. on certified sick leave).

  • Employees who are members of a trade union, without prior consent from the union (unless exceptions apply under law).

These restrictions are in place to protect employees' rights and promote fair labor practices. Any dismissal outside these conditions may be deemed unlawful.
