What are the standard working hours and overtime rules in New Zealand?

At Horizons, we follow New Zealand employment standards while also aligning with internal company policies designed to promote work-life balance and compliance.

Standard Working Hours

  • The standard maximum working time is 40 hours per week.

  • Flextime arrangements may be possible, depending on the client's operational needs and approval.

Overtime Policy

Horizons generally does not permit overtime as part of standard employment. Instead, any additional working hours must be:

  • Agreed in advance and clearly stated in the employment agreement

  • Limited to a maximum of 15% of the employee's ordinary weekly hours

  • Pre-approved by the client and Horizons

If overtime is agreed upon in exceptional cases, it is standard practice to include a clause in the employment agreement specifying that overtime will be compensated at 150% of the regular hourly rate.
