What are the working hour rules in Greece?

In Greece, standard working hours are regulated by law to ensure employee protection and proper compensation. The key rules are as follows:

  • Standard working hours:
Employees may work up to 40 hours per week, with a maximum of 8 hours per day.

  • Overwork (41 to 45 hours per week):
Time worked between the 41st and 45th hour in a week is classified as overwork and must be compensated at 120% of the employee’s hourly wage.

  • Overtime (above 45 hours per week):
Hours beyond 45 per week are considered overtime and are subject to stricter limits:

    • Maximum 3 hours of overtime per day

    • Maximum 150 overtime hours per year

    • Compensation for overtime must be paid at 140% of the hourly wage

  • Sunday work:
Work on Sundays is not allowed, except in specific, legally approved situations.

All working hour rules must be strictly followed to remain compliant with Greek labor law.
