How can an employee opt-out of the Pension Scheme in the United Kingdom (UK)?

If you've been automatically enrolled in a pension scheme and wish to opt out, it’s crucial to follow the correct procedure within the specified time frame. Below are the steps to opt out depending on your pension provider.

Aviva Pension Scheme

  1. Wait for Your Welcome Pack

    • Before opting out, ensure you have received your welcome pack, which will be mailed to your home address.
  2. Opt-Out Online

  3. Opt-Out by Phone

    • Call Aviva’s pension helpdesk at 0800 056 3192 to opt out by phone.
  4. Time Frame

    • You must opt out within 30 days of joining. If you miss this period, your contributions will remain in your pension fund, but you can request that Horizons stop future deductions through payroll.

Nest Pension Scheme

  1. Opt-Out Online

    • You can opt out without activating your online account. Visit the Nest website and click "Opt-out." You will need your Nest ID, date of birth, and National Insurance number or alternative identifier.
  2. Opt-Out by Phone

    • Call 0300 020 0090 and follow the automated instructions to complete the opt-out process.

Important Notes

  • Individual Responsibility: It is the employee’s responsibility to opt out directly with the pension provider within the specified period if they do not wish to participate in the scheme.
  • Refunds: If you opt out within the required period, you’ll receive a refund of any contributions made. If you miss the opt-out window, your contributions will remain in your pension fund.

For further assistance, please contact your pension provider directly.
