TABLE OF CONTENTS

Annual Leave

Employees in Burundi are entitled to paid annual leave after completing 12 months (1 year) of continuous service with the same employer.

  • Accrual Rate: 1⅔ working days per month, totaling 20 working days per year. One additional day of leave is granted for every 4 years of service with the same employer.
  • Pay rate: During leave, employees receive an allowance equal to their average daily wage.
  • Advance Notice: Employees must inform of their leave dates at least 15 days in advance. Collective agreements may also define leave periods.
  • Splitting Leave: Annual leave may be split, but employees must take at least 6 consecutive working days, including two weekly rest days, once per year. Any request to split leave must be made in writing.

Accumulated Leave

Employees may accumulate unused leave for up to two (2) years. After this period, the leave must be taken or compensated.

If an employment contract is terminated:

  • The employer must compensate the employee for any accrued but unused leave days.
  • This payment must be made within 2 days of the contract’s termination.
  • The compensation includes any other benefits owed at the time of departure.
