All employment terminations in Burundi must be communicated in writing, stating the reason and effective date of termination.
Employers must follow due process, and consider notice periods and severance entitlements.
Notice periods

Less than 3 years | 1 month |
3-5 years | 1.5 months (45 days) |
5-10 years | 2 months |
Over 10 years | 3 months |
Severance
Lenght of Service | Severance Pay |
Less than 3 years | 1/2 month's salary |
3-5 years | 1 month's salary |
5-10 years | 2 month's salary |
Over 10 years | 3 month's salary |
Important considerations
- Maternity Leave Protection: Dismissal during maternity leave is prohibited under Burundian law.
- Probationary Period: Employees on probation (up to 12 months) have limited protections, but must still receive written notice if terminated.
