Bank Holidays & Horizons Payroll Calendar in China

Q: How many Public Holidays are there in China per annum?

A:  There are 13 days of statutory Public Holiday for all citizens in PR China per annum. Each year's holidays are announced about three weeks before the start of the year by the General Office of the State Council.

In 2025, China has added two additional public holidays. The Spring Festival holiday now includes Chinese New Year's Eve, making it a four-day holiday. Additionally, Labor Day has been extended to include May 2 as an official holiday. Hence there are following public holidays for all citizens in China

  • New Year's Day (January 1)
  • Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) - This is the most important holiday, typically lasting a week, scheduled with [Link]Lunar Calendar
  • Qingming Festival (Tomb-Sweeping Day) - Usually in early April.
  • Labour Day (May 1) - Now extended to a five-day holiday.
  • Dragon Boat Festival - Usually in June2.
  • Mid-Autumn Festival - Usually in September or October, scheduled with [Link]Lunar Calendar
  • National Day (October 1) - This is another week-long holiday.

Q: How come there are some [W/E] landed onto Week Days on the calendar?

A: A notable feature of Chinese holidays is that weekends are usually swapped with the weekdays next to the actual holiday to create a longer holiday period, aka Weekend shifting scheme.

Holidays in China are complicated and are one of the least predictable among developing nations. In all these holidays, if the holiday lands on a weekend, the days will be reimbursed after the weekend.

The Chinese New Year and National Day holidays are three days long. The week-long holidays on May (Labor) Day and National Day began in 2000, as a measure to increase and encourage holiday spending. The resulting seven-day or eight-day (if Mid-Autumn Festival is near National Day) holidays are called "Golden Weeks" (黄金周), and have become peak seasons for travel and tourism. In 2008, the Labor Day holiday was shortened to three days to reduce travel rushes to just twice a year, and instead, three traditional Chinese holidays were added.

Generally, if there is a three-day or four-day (if Mid-Autumn Festival is near National Day) holiday, the government will declare it to be a seven-day or eight-day holiday. However, citizens are required to work during a nearby weekend. That's why the Week days are shifted and treated by Weekend as above.

Q: What is the pay day for Horizons to make monthly Remuneration and reimbursement for the approved expense?

A: The payout from Horizons and our payroll partner will be transferred to your designated bank account on the last working day[W/D] of each month in two separate remittances: one for Remuneration and one for expense.
