What is Fon.Te. Supplementary Pension Plan for employees in Italy?
Can Employees Opt into a Supplementary Pension Plan?
Yes, employees in Italy are eligible to voluntarily participate in the Fon.Te. pension fund, which provides a supplementary pension in addition to the state pension. Employees can choose to subscribe to Fon.Te. at any time during their employment. This fund helps employees build additional retirement savings as the state pension system shifts from an earnings-related to a contribution-based model, where pension amounts may decrease in the future.
What is Fon.Te.?
Fon.Te. is a collectively agreed supplementary pension fund for employees in the Tertiary sector. It is established through national collective bargaining agreements and allows employees in relevant sectors to have a second pension alongside the compulsory state pension.
Key features of Fon.Te. include:
- Managed by Professionals: The fund’s assets are managed by professional brokers selected through a regulated procedure. Managers follow strict investment policies, ensuring prudence and safeguarding members’ interests.
- Depository Bank: Assets for pension payments are held by a depository bank, which acts as a custodian and ensures compliance with management rules.
Employee and Employer Contributions
Participation in the Fon.Te. pension plan is optional for employees. Contributions depend on whether the employee chooses to make additional payments.
- Employee Contributions: Employees can contribute only their TFR (Trattamento di Fine Rapporto), in which case the employer does not have to contribute. If an employee chooses to make additional contributions (typically 0.55% of salary, though this can go up to 4%), the employer is obligated to contribute a fixed 1.55%.
