What are the Annual Leave Entitlements in South Africa?

Annual leave is a key benefit that provides employees with time off for rest and personal needs. In South Africa, the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA) governs annual leave entitlements.

Entitlement:

Employees are entitled to a minimum of 15 working days of annual leave per year, which equals 1.25 days per month worked.

Leave Cycle:

The leave cycle operates on a 12-month basis from the employee’s start date. For example, if an employee begins on 1st March 2023, their leave cycle will run from 1st March 2023 to 28th February 2024. The full annual leave entitlement is provided upfront at the start of the cycle and is replenished at the beginning of each new cycle.

Leave Accrual on Horizons Platform:

On the Horizons platform, annual leave is given upfront rather than being accrued monthly.

Pay During Leave:

Annual leave is paid at the employee’s regular rate of pay.

Termination of Employment:

Upon termination of employment, employees are entitled to payment for any accrued but unused leave.
