Belgium Eco-Vouchers: Everything You Need to Know
Modified on: Mon, 30 Mar, 2026 at 1:08 PM
What Are Eco-Vouchers?
Eco-vouchers are a statutory employee benefit in Belgium, provided by employers as a non-cash, non-taxable supplement to salary. They are designed to encourage sustainable consumption and can be used to purchase environmentally friendly products and services, such as energy-efficient appliances, organic food, sustainable mobility options, and more.
Eco-vouchers are mandatory as governed by CBA, the Joint Committee 200 of 9 June 2016 and are subject to strict rules to retain their tax-exempt status.
Key Rules and Legal Framework
For eco-vouchers to remain exempt from social security contributions and personal income tax, the following conditions must be met:
The total amount is €250 per employee per year
They must be issued in electronic form (loaded onto a benefit card)
They can only be used to purchase goods and services from an approved list of eco-friendly products and services
They cannot be exchanged for cash
They have a validity period of 24 months from the date of issue
Who Is Eligible?
All employees working under a Belgian employment contract are entitled to eco-vouchers, subject to the terms of the applicable CBA or individual employment agreement. For employees who have not completed a full year of service, the amount is calculated on a pro-rata basis relative to the number of months worked during the reference period.
How Are Eco-Vouchers Loaded and When?
Eco-vouchers are loaded electronically onto your employee benefit card once per year, during the standard June cycle. The amount loaded reflects each employee's entitlement based on their accrual period and tenure.
For employees who join mid-year, the amount will be proportional to the number of months accrued from their start date through to the end of the reference period.
How Much Do Eco-Vouchers Cost? (For Clients)
The cost of eco-vouchers per employee is made up of the statutory benefit amount plus a vendor service fee charged by the card provider:
Component | Amount |
|---|---|
Statutory eco-voucher amount | €250.00 |
Vendor service fee (5.17%) | €12.93 |
Total per employee per year | €262.93 |
For employees who have not completed a full year of service, costs are applied proportionally based on months accrued. From April 2026 onwards, eco-voucher billing is processed on a monthly accrual basis, providing greater cost predictability.
How Can Eco-Vouchers Be Used? (For Employees)
Eco-vouchers are loaded onto your benefit card and can be used at any participating retailer or service provider that accepts them. Eligible purchases include, but are not limited to:
Energy-efficient household appliances
Organic and sustainable food products
Products promoting sustainable mobility (e.g. bicycle accessories)
Green energy solutions and insulation products
Eco-certified products bearing recognised environmental labels
Eco-vouchers cannot be used for non-eligible purchases, exchanged for cash, or transferred to another person. Any unused balance will expire at the end of the 24-month validity window.
Impact on Tax and Salary
Eco-vouchers are fully non-taxable when issued within the legal framework. They do not affect your gross or net salary, nor do they appear as taxable income. Provided the annual amount does not exceed €250, there is no impact on social security contributions for either the employee or the employer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will I receive eco-vouchers every year? Yes. Eco-vouchers are renewed annually during the June cycle, provided you remain employed under a Belgian contract.
What happens if I join mid-year? Your entitlement will be calculated pro-rata based on the number of months you have worked during the reference period.
What happens if I leave the company before June? Entitlement upon departure is calculated based on the months accrued up to your last working day and will be reflected in your final settlement.
Can I carry over unused vouchers? Yes. Eco-vouchers are valid for 24 months from the date they are loaded, so any unused balance remains available on your card until the expiry date.
