What type of employment contract does Horizons offer in Cyprus?

Horizons primarily offers unlimited (indefinite) employment agreements to employees in Cyprus. This is the standard employment arrangement under Cypriot labor law and is generally suitable for ongoing roles without a defined end date.

Unlimited (Indefinite) Employment Agreements

This is the standard agreement Horizons uses for most employment relationships in Cyprus. It is available for both full-time and part-time employees.

Part-time arrangements:

  • Part-time employment is possible with a maximum of 5 hours per week.

  • The employment agreement must explicitly mention the employee’s weekly working hours.

Fixed-Term Employment Agreements

While less common, fixed-term contracts are also possible in Cyprus under specific conditions. These are used when the nature of the work justifies a limited employment duration.

Valid reasons to offer a fixed-term contract include:

  • The position is temporary in nature and linked to a specific task.

  • The employee is replacing another employee temporarily (e.g., during maternity or sick leave).

  • The nature or specificity of the project requires a defined timeline.

  • The contract results from a judicial or administrative decision.

Contract duration and renewal rules:

  • A fixed-term contract may last up to 30 months, including any renewals.

  • If no action is taken by either party at the end of the fixed term and the employee continues working, the contract is automatically converted to an indefinite agreement.

  • Employers are legally obligated to inform fixed-term employees of any available permanent roles.

Part-time fixed-term contracts:

  • As with indefinite contracts, part-time fixed-term employment is allowed (up to 5 hours per week), with working hours clearly stated in the contract.
