What other types of leave are available to employees in Romania?

In addition to annual leave and public holidays, Romanian labor law provides several other types of paid and unpaid leave.

Paid Leave Types

Paternity Leave (Second Parent)
Employees acting as the second parent are entitled to 10 to 15 calendar days of paid paternity leave. During this period, the employer pays 100% of the employee’s salary.

Bereavement Leave
Employees are entitled to 3 days of paid leave in the event of the death of a close family member.

Marriage Leave
Employees may take paid leave for marriage events as follows:

  • 5 days for their own marriage

  • 2 days for the marriage of their child

  • 1 day for the marriage of a sibling or grandparent

Carer’s Leave
Employees are entitled to 2 hours per day of paid leave to care for a child until the child reaches one year of age.

Vocational Leave
Employees may take up to 10 working days (or 80 hours) per year of paid vocational leave for educational or training purposes.

Unpaid Leave Types

Maternity/Pregnancy Leave
Pregnant employees are entitled to 126 calendar days of maternity leave, split evenly into 63 days before and 63 days after birth. During this period, social insurance provides 85% of the employee’s salary.

Parental Leave for Disabled Child
Parents of disabled children are entitled to up to 3 years of parental leave (2 years if the child is not disabled). Social insurance pays 85% of the salary during this leave.

Other Contract Suspension Reasons
Certain situations allow for suspension of the employment contract without salary payment. These are regulated under Romanian labor law and vary depending on the cause.
