What types of paid and unpaid leave are available in Latvia?
Latvian labor law provides for a range of paid and unpaid leave types to support employees during key life events, family responsibilities, and education. Below is a summary of the main entitlements:
Paid Leave
Pregnancy and Maternity Leave
Total: 112 calendar days, split as follows:
Pregnancy leave: 56 calendar days (before childbirth)
Maternity leave: 56 calendar days (after childbirth)
Additional 14 calendar days are granted if:
The employee begins medical care before the 12th week and continues it throughout the pregnancy
There are childbirth complications or multiple births
Paternity or Alternative Caregiver Leave
10 working days, to be taken immediately after the birth or within 6 months
Adoption Leave
10 calendar days, for adopting a child under 18 years of age
Childcare Leave
Up to 1.5 years (18 months), to be used before the child turns 8
Must be requested at least 1 month in advance
Each leave period must be at least 1 continuous calendar week
Additional Paid Leave for Parents
3 extra working days: For employees with 3 or more children under 16 or a disabled child under 18
At least 1 extra working day: For employees with fewer than 3 children under 14
Educational (Study) Leave
20 working days, for taking state exams or preparing/defending a diploma thesis
Unpaid Leave
Adoption Process Leave
Unpaid leave may be granted for the period specified by the Orphan’s Court, but not beyond the child’s 1.5 years of age
National Guard Service Leave
Leave is granted for the duration of service, in accordance with official orders
Carer’s Leave
Up to 5 working days per year, to care for a close family or household member with a serious medical condition
Can be taken in parts as needed
