What are the sick leave entitlements for employees in Latvia?
In Latvia, employees are entitled to paid sick leave after meeting certain eligibility criteria. The duration and payment of sick leave are regulated by law and involve both the employer and the national health authorities.
Entitlement
Employees are eligible for paid sick leave after 6 months of continuous employment. Sick leave covers the entire period of medical incapacity. There is a 1-day unpaid waiting period at the start of the leave.
Payment by the Employer
Days 2–3: At least 75% of the employee’s regular salary
Days 4–9: At least 80% of the employee’s regular salary
Payment by Health Authorities
From Day 11 up to 26 weeks: 80% of the employee’s average income, based on the 6 months prior to the illness
