What employment agreement types does Horizons offer in Latvia?
Horizons offers two main types of employment agreements in Latvia: unlimited-term and fixed-term. Both contract types may be arranged on either a full-time or part-time basis, in accordance with local labor law.
1. Unlimited-Term Employment Agreement (Standard)
This is the most common contract type in Latvia, with no fixed end date. It remains valid until terminated by either party with appropriate notice.
Suitable for long-term, ongoing roles.
Can be structured as full-time or part-time.
For part-time contracts, working hours must be clearly stated in the agreement.
2. Fixed-Term Employment Agreement (Less Standard but Possible)
Fixed-term contracts are allowed when justified by specific circumstances, such as:
Seasonal work;
Temporary replacement of absent employees;
Project-based or occasional tasks;
Business expansion or peak demand;
Urgent or unforeseen business needs;
Student employment tied to training programs.
Key points:
Maximum duration: 5 years, including renewals.
Automatically converts to an unlimited-term contract if not ended at expiry and work continues.
Employers must inform fixed-term employees of available permanent positions.
May be full-time or part-time, with working hours explicitly stated in the contract.
