What is ARL in Colombia and why is it required?

ARL is Colombia’s Occupational Risk Insurance, designed to protect employees from the consequences of work-related accidents or illnesses.

This coverage is a mandatory part of employment compliance in Colombia and is entirely separate from the standard public health insurance system (EPS).

What Does ARL Cover?

ARL provides comprehensive protection in cases where an injury or illness is directly caused by the employee’s work. This includes:

  • 100% coverage of medical expenses for work-related injuries or occupational diseases

  • Full salary compensation during medical leave due to a workplace incident

  • Disability pensions if the employee suffers permanent incapacity

  • Death benefits for the employee’s family in the event of a fatal work accident

Important: ARL does not cover general health issues. Routine care continues to be handled through the EPS (Entidad Promotora de Salud) system.
