How is Annual Leave regulated in Hungary?

Annual leave in Hungary is regulated by labor laws to ensure employees have adequate rest and personal time. The system is based on the employee's age, family status, and length of service.

Minimum Annual Leave Entitlement

The minimum number of annual leave days depends on the employee's age:

  • 20 days: For employees up to 24 years old.
  • 21 days: Ages 25 to 27.
  • 22 days: Ages 28 to 30.
  • 23 days: Ages 31 to 32.
  • 24 days: Ages 33 to 34.
  • 25 days: Ages 35 to 36.
  • 26 days: Ages 37 to 38.
  • 27 days: Ages 39 to 40.
  • 28 days: Ages 41 to 42.
  • 29 days: Ages 43 to 44.
  • 30 days: For employees aged 45 and older.


Additional Leave for Specific Cases

Employees with children are entitled to extra leave days each year:

  • +2 days: For the first child.
  • +4 days: For the second child.
  • +7 days: For more than two children.


Accrual and Pro-Rated Leave

  • In the first year of employment, annual leave is pro-rated based on the time worked.
  • From the second year onwards, employees are entitled to the full number of leave days based on their age.


Carrying Over Unused Leave

  • Employees may carry over unused leave to the following year.
  • Maximum by law: Up to 5 days can be carried forward, ensuring employees use their leave within a reasonable timeframe.
