What are the standard Probation Periods in Mozambique?

Probation periods in Mozambique are designed to allow both employers and employees to evaluate the fit of the employment arrangement before the contract becomes fully effective.

Probation Periods for Unlimited Contracts

  • Maximum Duration: For employees on an unlimited (indefinite) contract, the probation period can last up to 6 months. This allows sufficient time to assess performance and suitability for the role.

Probation Periods for Fixed-Term Contracts

The length of the probation period for fixed-term contracts depends on the duration of the contract itself:

  1. Contracts Less Than 6 Months:

    • Maximum Probation Period: Up to 15 days. Short-term contracts have a shorter probation period to reflect their brief duration.
  2. Contracts from 6 Months to 1 Year:

    • Maximum Probation Period: Up to 30 days. This allows for a reasonable assessment period for contracts of intermediate length.
  3. Contracts Longer Than 1 Year:

    • Maximum Probation Period: Up to 90 days. Longer contracts provide a more extended probation period to evaluate long-term suitability.
