What are additional Leaves in France?

In addition to standard annual and maternity leave, French labor law provides for several types of exceptional leave to accommodate employees' needs during significant life events. This article outlines the types and durations of exceptional paid leave available under the French Labor Code and the Syntec Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).


Exceptional Additional Paid Leave

  • Marriage: Employees are entitled to 4+4 days of leave. This leave is non-deductible from annual leave.

  • PACS (Civil Partnership): Employees are granted 4+4 days of leave, similar to marriage.

  • Marriage of a Child: Employees are entitled to 1+1 day of leave.

  • Discovery of Handicap in Own Child: Employees receive 2+2 days of leave to address the discovery of a disability in their child.


Death of a Close Relative

  • Death of a Child:

    • Under 25: 5+7 days of leave, plus an additional 8 days for mourning, to be taken within one year.
    • 25 and Over with No Children: 5+5 days.
    • 25 and Over with Children: 5+7 days.
  • Death of Relatives:

    • Parents, Spouse, or Partner: 3+3 days of leave.
    • Grandparents or Older Relatives: 2 days.
    • Siblings or Step-Parents: 3+3 days of leave.


Parental Leave for Child Sickness

  • For Children Under 1 Year Old: Employees are entitled to 5+5 days of leave.

  • For Children Under 16 Years Old: Employees can take 3+3 days of leave.

  • For Employees with 3 or More Children Under 16 Years Old: The leave entitlement increases to 5+5 days.
