What are the annual leaves in Austria?

In Austria, employees have a minimum annual leave entitlement of 25 days, which increases with service length. Leave is accrued monthly, with full entitlement available after 6 months.
Leave can be carried over for up to 2 years, but compensation for unused leave is generally not allowed except upon termination.

Minimum Entitlement

  • Standard Annual Leave: Employees are entitled to a minimum of 25 working days of annual leave per year.
  • After 25 Years of Service: The entitlement increases to 30 working days per year.
  • Additional Entitlement: Employees who have worked continuously for 2 years and have completed secondary education or equivalent receive an additional 3 years' worth of service for holiday entitlement calculation.

Special Provisions

  • Registered Disabled Employees: An additional 3 days of annual leave per year are granted.

Accrual and Carry Over

  • Pro-Rated Leave: For the first year of service, leave is accrued on a pro-rata basis (aliquot leave entitlement).
  • Full Entitlement: Employees are eligible for their full leave entitlement after 6 months of service.
  • Carry Over: Annual leave can be carried over to the next year but must be used within 2 years. Unused leave expires after this period.

Compensation

  • Untaken Leave: Employees cannot be compensated for untaken leave (neither paid out nor substituted with non-monetary benefits), except in the case of termination, where payment for unused leave days is mandated.
