Can employees work on public holidays in Bangladesh?

In Bangladesh, public holidays are generally observed nationwide, and employees typically have the day off. However, if an employee is required to work on a public holiday, particularly during festival holidays, there are specific provisions in place to compensate for this.

Compensation for Working on Public Holidays

  • Festival Holidays: If an employee works on a public holiday, especially during significant festival holidays such as Eid-ul-Fitr, Eid-ul-Adha, or other major celebrations, they are entitled to additional compensation.

Compensatory Benefits

  • Compensatory Paid Holidays: Employees who work on a public holiday are granted two additional compensatory paid holidays. These extra days off are intended to ensure that employees receive adequate time to rest and recuperate for working during their scheduled time off.

  • Substitute Holiday: In addition to the compensatory paid holidays, employees are also entitled to a substitute holiday. This means that they can take another day off, which is considered equivalent to the public holiday they worked through.
